Founders Story
Kent’s journey has been one of resilience, perseverance, and ultimately, finding a place to call home. Born into a military family in Illinois, Kent faced hardships early on, which led him to enlist in the military himself. However, his service came with its own challenges, particularly grappling with PTSD, eventually resulting in him experiencing homelessness.
During the years 2021 and 2022, Kent found refuge at the YMCA Supportive Housing Campus. Despite the difficulties he faced, he found solace in his own room on the 3rd floor, affectionately dubbing it his “penthouse.” It was here that he began rebuilding his life and making a difference in the community.
With the support of the YSHC’s Case Management and the VA, Kent quickly secured employment at a roofing company. His daily routine involved waking up at 5 am to catch a bus at Dart, utilizing the bus tokens provided by YSHC. Through the guidance of his Case Manager, Morgan, Kent even obtained his driver’s license, symbolizing a significant step towards independence.
But amidst the challenges, there was also love. Kent met his wife, Kim, while living at the YMCA Supportive Housing Campus in December 2021, and they tied the knot on Leap Day at Veterans Memorial Park in Brevard County. Kent’s and Kim’s journey didn’t stop there. Inspired by their “snowbird” visits to Florida, Kent and Kim decided to make it their permanent home. With the help of a VA loan, they secured a new house, fulfilling their dream of basking in the Florida sun.
Reflecting on his journey, Kent acknowledges the pivotal role the YMCA Supportive Housing Campus played in his life. It wasn’t just a place to stay; it was a community that embraced him, offering support and camaraderie when he needed it most. “I had nothing but a bag of clothes, I had no where to go.” Kent reflected, “There is a village of people there that want to make a difference.”
Today, Kent enjoys the simple pleasures of life, whether it’s learning to surf at the beach or being a mentor to those around him. He cherishes the newfound family he has with Kim and her children, even bridging the gap with his own daughter, reuniting with her after years. For Kent, the YMCA Supportive Housing Campus wasn’t just a temporary shelter; it was the starting point of a new chapter, filled with love, gratitude, and endless possibilities.
